Texas Tribune: Child poverty by county

[Editor's Note: The following report from the Texas Tribune shows that Somervell County ranks low, 223rd out of 254 Texas counties, for child poverty. However, the number of children in poverty in the county still increased 17.9 percent from 2000 to 2011, the most recent year for which data is available. Remember this holiday season that there are still many children and families in our area who need help, and please give generously to local nonprofits and "angel trees."]

In fast-growing Texas, which is home to one in 11 of the nation’s children, child poverty has continued to rise despite an improving economy, according to a new report from the Center for Public Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank.

Use this interactive to see which Texas counties have the highest rates of child poverty and unemployment, and to see which counties have the highest raw numbers of children in poverty or people who are unemployed. The counties will be sorted from highest to lowest. If you would like to learn more about a county’s history, click on “View Chart” to see how its child poverty rate and unemployment rate compared to the state average over the last ten years.

The child poverty metrics found in this report come from the Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, and the unemployment metrics are provided by the Texas Workforce Commission.

If the Texas Tribune were to check out the expenditures of government programs in each county, I believe that they would find a correlation with child poverty.
Although this would not be a profound revelation, it would point out the ineffectiveness of government programs to “help” the poor. As a matter of fact, these figures appear to have grown more during the Obama administration as has the financial disparity between the middle class and the super rich.
No matter how hard they try to “help” the poor,
nothing works better than a strong economy to provide jobs and financial benefits for all Americans.
What government “help” does is maintain a poverty level that is unacceptable and therein lies a correlation between this administrations attempts to control business activity and their so-called concern for the middle class and the poor.
Until liberals/progressives are willing to face these facts, America will remain captive to programs that only serve to maintain dependency upon government and create permanent poverty for
    certain citizens.

Yes, it’s very sad so many children are caught in poverty. The only way I know to help is through private groups such as churches and promoting education. Government programs and expenditures don’t seem to help children (except for Medicaid when poor children get sick) or to improve education. So many attempted “solutions” have failed. Thoughts, anyone? What can we do in Somervell County?
