Somervell County officials approved a total of $2,227,403 in the fiscal year 2012/13 budget for health-related care. Of the $2 million-plus amount, $935,853 was budgeted for Certificates of Obligation debt service for hospital improvements, $836,540 for indigent healthcare and $505,000 for hospital assistance.

If Somervell County voters approve the hospital district, the district would be responsible for funding healthcare in Somervell County, therefore relieving the county judge and county commissioners of the burden of over $2 million of expenditures in future consecutive years. The burden would be shifted to the hospital district.

If the hospital district is rejected by the voters, the $2 million plus amount would still be the responsibility of the county. The approval of the hospital district will cost the taxpayers a few dollars more each month and provide viable, long term, quality healthcare for the residents of Somervell County. The approval of the hospital district would allow the county judge and county commissioners to continue to provide the excellent amenities and services you have become accustomed to and deserve.

If the hospital district is not approved and the Glen Rose Medical Center is leased, or worse, closes, the county would still be burdened with over $1.7 million of expenditures ($935,000 debt service for the next 25 years and 8 percent of the total tax levy each year for indigent healthcare, which is $836,540 this year).

Looking at both sides of the coin, approval of the hospital district makes sense. It is a WIN-WIN situation for the taxpayers in Somervell County. Supporting the hospital district by voting YES is a WIN-WIN Deal!

Let’s all look to the future and not just today. We encourage you to vote YES for the hospital district on May 11. Early voting begins April 29.
