The Somervell County Hospital District board’s agenda for its regular monthly meeting this Thursday calls for it to discuss and take action on the proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

The board must approve a budget and property tax rate before the new fiscal year begins Oct. 1. Its budget and finance committee has been holding workshops in preparation for the decision.

The public meeting meeting will be held at 7 p.m., July 31, at the Somervell County Citizens Center.

At the May board meeting, member Paul Harper asked Wes Rollen, chief appraiser of the Somervell Central Appraisal District, about the time frame of voting if members wanted to eliminate the tax.

“So if we wanted to set or let’s say, eliminate, the tax, we would have to do it before the end of September?” he asked.

“Yes,” Rollen replied.

Last year’s adopted 10.5 cent property tax rate per $100 of appraised value generated more than $2.9 million. The average homestead value in the county last year was $121,862, Rollen said.

The average homeowner paid $102.36 in hospital district tax, Rollen said, while taxpayers over age 65 paid $49.86.

Members also are slated to discuss and possibly take action on the length of terms the two board members who received tie votes – Eugene Brode and Harper.

Another agenda items calls for discussing and possibly taking action to remove Glen Rose Medical Center’s current Facebook page and closing its Twitter account, and returning the Facebook page to the control of hospital employees.

Also under consideration is whether to begin each meeting with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag.
