Somervell County residents concerned about the quality of health care at nearby hospitals might find an article in the May 2014 Consumer Reports magazine of interest. The magazine reports the safety score for hospitals across the nation, listing those with the best and worst ratings.

For better or worse, Texas hospitals avoided lists for best and worst.

The rankings, however, are based on data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which includes information on area hospitals.

According to the center, there are three acute care hospitals within a 30-mile radius of Glen Rose – Glen Rose Medical Center, Lake Granbury Medical Center and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville. Each facility provides emergency services and has the ability to electronically retrieve and track patient lab and test results.

A tab for a survey of patients’ experiences shows the percentage of patients who said they “would definitely recommend” each of the three hospitals.

Glen Rose Medical received the highest rating at 81 percent, following by Harris Methodist Stephenville at 74 percent, and Lake Granbury Medical at 64 percent. The national average was 71 percent.

Data about readmissions, complications and death are a bit murkier.

One category compares the three hospitals to the national 15.2 percent death rate for heart attack patients.

For Glen Rose, the number of cases was too few to report, while the Granbury and Stephenville facilities were no different than the national rate.

Lake Granbury Medical, however, ranked worse than national death rate for heart failure and pneumonia patients, while Glen Rose and Harris Methodist Stephenville were both ranked no different than U.S. national rate.

There are numerous ways to sort and crunch the data. If you’d like to make your own comparison, additional information and easy-to-use tools are available at

I was proud of our hospital before this article came out and now I am doubly proud. The citizens of Glen Rose are fortunate in having this wonderful facility. We should all work diligently to ensure its future.
