Special to the Current

Dinosaur Valley State Park is now taking applications for the first-ever Citizen’s Park Ranger Academy.

This will be an eight-week academy meeting every Saturday starting August 17. Students will be given a hands-on opportunity to learn the various operating aspects of Dinosaur Valley State Park. They will experience wildland firefighting training and equipment, search and rescue operations, park interpretive programs, park law enforcement, park infrastructure operations and several other areas.

The classes will be scenario-based and students will be given an opportunity to experience the adventures of working in a state park. The program is designed to create avid supporters for our local state park, which benefits Somervell County.

The academy is open to all residents of adjacent counties and Somervell County business owners. The minimum age is 15. There is no cost for the program and when students graduate they will receive a certificate and T-shirt. Graduates will also be asked to continue supporting the park by joining our Friends Group.

For more information, please contact Shannon Blalock, park superintendent, at 254-897-3129, ext. 222 (office) or 254-396-7574 (cell). The fax number is 254-897-3409.
