Dinosaur Valley State Park will be closed to public use from Monday, Jan. 13, to Friday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. for the annual public hunt.

Public land hunts are a critically important resource management tool used to maintain the white-tailed deer population at a healthy and sustainable level, according to Park Superintendent Shannon Blalock.

“White-tailed deer populations can quickly grow to exceed the carrying capacity of the land in the absence of historical predators,” Blalock said in a prepared statement.

“Carrying capacity is the maximum number of animals of a given species that a unit of land can support without degradation of that land to support the population in the future,” she explained.

The Dinosaur Valley State Park Public Lands Hunt is done through a drawing. The Public Hunting Drawing System provides low-cost, high-quality public hunting opportunities throughout the state. Individuals are drawn for a special permit by random computer selection from a qualified pool of applicants.

“At Dinosaur Valley State Park, the Public Lands Hunt is driven by safety,” Blalock said. “Hunters arrive at a specified time. Park rangers drop hunters off at assigned blinds, and hunters are given specific firing lanes. Hunters must stay in their blinds until park staff picks them up again at another specified time. Safety is our No. 1 priority.”

Dinosaur Valley State Park is a 1,597-acre parcel of public land managed by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department to conserve natural and cultural resources, provide recreational and educational opportunities, and foster an understanding of the diversity of Texas’ lands and heritage for all generations.

Hi, William, thanks for reading and for your question. I believe the drawing for the January 2014 public hunt has already been held. But you could contact Shannon Blalock, the park superintendent, at 254-396-7574 or by e-mail at shannon.blalock@tpwd.texas.gov. She could tell you the procedures for applying for the public hunt. Hope that helps.
