“Tour de Coop,” the first annual tour of Somervell County chicken coops, will be held Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Three chicken houses will display their feathered house guests. There also will be opportunities to talk with the owners about raising your own backyard flock.

You can go in any order on the tour. Visit all three! The tour is free.

Rhineland Farm, 3157 CR 411

From the historic square, take State Highway 144 south. Turn left on Highway 56. Turn left on CR 411. This road goes straight, then gets curvy. Cross the low water crossing and go up the hill. Pass the turn to Riverbend,
and the farm is inside the second gate on the left. Signs posted. Variety of eggs, layers, meat chickens, bantams and guineas.

Lancaster Place, 2808 CR 2021

From the historic square,go west on S.W. Barnard to U.S. Highway 67. Turn left. Travel 2 miles, turn left into Ridgeview on CR 2021. Go 1.8 miles.

House is on the left before the cul-de-sac. Small flock of Rhode Island Reds Dominique and Leghorns, and a few bantams.

Best Farm, 1337 CR 330

From the historic square, travel on N.E. Barnard to U.S. Highway 67. Turn right. Go about 3 miles (you will pass Squaw Valley Vet Clinic on the right). Turn left on 330 between the red/white and blue/white storage buildings. Go to the end of the road and look for signs.

Rhineland Farm will have crafts people, bakers and growers of good things set up with their tempting wares for you to purchase and take home. Samples of lavender lemonade will refresh you. Also available at Rhineland Farm will be their whole, frozen organic chickens. They go fast, so get some when you come.
