Commissioners meet Monday to consider CAD board vacancy, long list of agenda items

The Somervell County Commissioners Court will hold its regular meeting Monday, Dec. 10, at 9:30 a.m. to consider a long list of agenda items, including nominations to fill a vacancy on the Central Appraisal District board of directors.

The significance of CAD board members’ roles in the community became apparent this past summer when downtown building owners were hit with valuation hikes that in some cases doubled, tripled or quadrupled their property taxes.

One business, Caylor Creek, closed and owner Audrey Caylor cited the valuation hike as one of the factors in her decision to shutter her boutique and floral shop, both of which were retail anchors on the downtown square.

A board independent of the CAD, the Appraisal Review Board, hears appeals of property valuations. Several property owners earlier this year appeared before the ARB to protest their valuations.

Also up for discussion and/or action are a request from the Somervell County Master Gardeners to develop a demonstration garden; reconsideration of the burn ban and/or fireworks ban; an interlocal agreement with the City of Glen Rose for economic development services; and a proposed $63,000 contract to purchase software and services for records management in the county clerks office.

    Kathryn,

You may have missed one of the duties of the CAD Board of Directors. You made mention that one of the duties of the CAD Board is “to consider appeals from property owners who disagree with the CAD valuations”. If you check, I think you will find the appeal process is heard by the Appraisal Review Board (ARB), a board seperate and independent of the CAD and its Board of Directors.

Thanks for the job you do.

Sorry, Mary. I guess the 129-page pdf with all the attachments was too big and it wouldn’t load. I’ve added the agenda to the bottom of the story. Thanks for letting me know.

      Best,
      Kathryn
