Citizens Center to offer Facebook, Pinterest, craft classes

Special to the Current

like_us_on_facebookHave you been missing out on your grandkids’ photos and videos because you just don’t know what this “Facebook” is all about? Have you seen all sorts of nifty creations that your friends are making and talking about seeing on Pinterest and wondered how you could see these ideas, too?

We will be having classes on both next month. We will be using our big-screen TV as a computer monitor, so we don’t have to be huddled up around a computer. You can come sit on the couches and recliners and learn in comfort without straining to see what’s going on.

The Facebook class will be on Thursday, Aug. 14,  from 10 a.m. to noon. The Pinterest class will be on the following Thursday, Aug. 21, from 10 to noon.

On that note, would you like to make some of the things you find on Pinterest? We will be starting a monthly craft class to do just that. Stay tuned to our article for more information.

The new month is almost upon us, so don’t forget Swap & Shop on Friday, Aug. 2. Tables to sell your wares are only $5! You can’t beat that anywhere.

The Penny Auction is coming! We are gathering up auction items from our local businesses and getting excited about this fundraiser. If you have never been to a penny auction, it’s a lot of fun.

We have been asked “how do you make any money from a ‘penny’ auction?” It works because everyone puts the required “bid” into their cup, but only one person will win the item. The required bids are anywhere from a few cents to a dollar or so, depending on the item. All that change adds up quickly.

We will have snacks and drinks for purchase and a bake sale going on, as well. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Aug. 16, and come have a little fun and help us raise money for the center.

Our next dance will be this Friday, July 25featuring Michael Cote. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door. Now serving snacks at intermission.

Don’t forget to join us next Tuesday at 6 p.m. for gospel music and potluck supper. Bring your favorite dish and come sing along.

Correction: We will not be having our family game night in July or August.

Winners of last week’s Forty-Two tournament were: Royce Stacy and Clark Stewart in first place, Loveda Swaim and Don Baker in second, Nancy Moore and Dortha Beck in third and Janelle Gartrell and Ann Parham in fourth.

Activities at the Citizens Center beginning July 28 are: the afternoon movie, chess and bingo on Monday; Wii bowling and wood carvers on Tuesday; line dancing lessons on Wednesday; chess and David’s shopping on Thursday; and Swap & Shop, bingo and Brookshire’s shopping on Friday. Besides the scheduled activities, there are games, puzzles, quilting, Forty-Two and visiting going on every day.

If you know anyone who may need meals, transportation, an emergency response system, medical equipment, Food Stamp (SNAP), Medicaid or Somervell County Food Bank applications, utility assistance applications or any other senior-oriented services, please call or come by the center.

Remember that you don’t have to be a senior to come and enjoy all of our activities or eat lunch with us. Don’t forget to visit our website at www.glenrosesccoa.com for menus, activities, articles, links to other sites and lots of pictures, or “like” our Facebook page, “Somervell Citizens’ Center.” Our number is 254-897-2139.
