The Somervell County Citizens Center will honor some local residents again this May when we host our 44th annual Older Texan Awards. A committee of county residents nominates and votes for four to six people every year to receive this honor. The nominees must be county residents who are active in the community and be at least 60 years old.

This year’s awards will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29.

The center has a temporary, part-time position in the kitchen available. Please apply in person.

We will be closed in honor of Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.  Please have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

Our next dance will be this Friday, May 23, featuring Cindy Renee & Company. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door. We’re now serving snacks at intermission.

Winners of last week’s Bunco tournament were: John Psencik with the most Buncos, Louise McCoy with the most wins and Jay Wright with the most losses. Others playing in the tournament were: Roger Jordan, Rosemary Cooper, Don Baker, Ann Parham, Royce Stacy, Norma Wright, Carole Kofke, Lois Wooley, Jimmy Riley, Betty Flanagan, Zula Hunter, Patsy Thompson, Roy Cooper, Mary Riley and Janet Stacy.

Activities at the Citizens Center beginning May 26 are: closed for holiday on Monday; gospel music, Wii bowling and woodcarvers on Tuesday; Bunco tournament, blood pressure checks by Glen Rose Nursing & Rehab and line dancing lessons on Wednesday; chess and David’s shopping on Thursday; and Friday night dance, bingo and Brookshire’s shopping on Friday.

Besides the scheduled activities, there are games, puzzles, quilting, Forty-Two and visiting going on every day.

If you know anyone who may need meals, transportation, an emergency response system, medical equipment, food stamp (SNAP), Medicaid or Somervell County Food Bank applications, utility assistance applications or any other senior-oriented services, please call or come by the center.

Remember that you don’t have to be a senior to come and enjoy all of our activities or eat lunch with us. Don’t forget to visit our website at www.glenrosesccoa.com for menus, activities, articles, links to other sites and lots of pictures, or “like” our Facebook page, “Somervell Citizens’ Center.” Our number is 254-897-2139.
