Citizens Center news and events

Special to the Current

Don’t for get to join us this Friday as we celebrate our mothers. We will have the photos ready from our glamour shoot.

We will be carrying on the penny auction that the Genealogy Society used to have every August.  They have been so kind to meet with us and share what they learned in the many years they had the fundraiser. We have it scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16, and it will benefit the Somervell County Committee on Aging.  Donated funds go to help Somervell County seniors receive meals, transportation and many other services.

We will be honoring some local residents again this May when we host our 44th annual Older Texan Awards. A committee of county residents nominates and votes for four to six people every year to receive this honor. The nominees must be county residents who are active in the community and be at least 60 years old. This year’s awards will be on Thursday, May 29, at 11 a.m.

Our next dance will be this Friday, May 9,  featuring Michael Cote. Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door.

There will be a support group for caregivers of aging parents meeting in the Paluxy Room on the second Tuesday of every month beginning in May. The RECAP (Resources and Education for Caregivers of Aging Parents) group will have various speakers each month, discussing various resources for caregivers.

There were no tournaments to report on, as last week was a fifth Wednesday.

Activities at the Citizens Center beginning May 12 are: Walmart shopping trip, chess and bingo on Monday; RECAP meeting, afternoon movie, Wii bowling and woodcarvers on Tuesday; bunco tournament, line dancing lessons and blood pressure testing by Glen Rose Nursing & Rehab on Wednesday; chess and David’s shopping on Thursday; and game night, bingo and Brookshire’s shopping on Friday. Besides the scheduled activities, there are games, puzzles, quilting, Forty-Two and visiting going on every day.

If you know anyone who may need meals, transportation, an emergency response system, medical equipment, Food Stamp (SNAP), Medicaid or Somevell County Food Bank applications, utility assistance applications or any other senior oriented services, please call or come by the center.

Remember that you don’t have to be a senior to come and enjoy all of our activities or eat lunch with us.  Don’t forget to visit our website at www.glenrosesccoa.com for menus, activities, articles, links to other sites and lots of pictures, or “like” our Facebook page, “Somervell Citizens’ Center.” Our number is 254-897-2139.
