Citizens Center activities for September

Special to the Current

img15Where has the month of September gone? Next Wednesday is already the fourth Wednesday in the month! Come celebrate September birthdays with us that day, Sept. 24, at 11:30 a.m.

We will be hosting a program this month by the Alzheimer’s Association entitled “It’s Never Too Early to Make Legal Plans.” Please join us on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 1 p.m. as we explore the legal issues most of us will eventually have to face.

Our first Tuesday craft class went pretty well considering we had some last-minute folks. Most times, it will be fine to just show up, but we had to get creative in coming up with the right letters of the alphabet for everyone to decorate. We have all the crafts for the month of September on the calendar and there are sign-up sheets by the reception desk.

We are making flavored syrups for coffee or sodas next week and a metal stamped necklace on Sept. 30. We will be doing these inexpensive Christmas gift ideas from Pinterest all the way up to Christmas, excluding the first Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and join us for gospel music and bring a dish for the potluck supper on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m.

Our next dance will be Friday, Sept. 26featuring Pete & Patty. Doors open at 6 p.m.. Admission is $5 at the door. Now serving snacks at intermission.

Winners of last week’s bunco tournament were: Roger Jordan had the most buncos (but there was a four-way tie that resulted in a roll-off), Zula Hunter had the most wins and Royce Stacy had the most losses. Others playing in the tournament were: Carole Kofke, Ann Parham, Betty Flanagan, Louise McCoy, Jeannie Von Baur, Janet Stacy and Pat Thompson.

Activities at the Citizens Center beginning Sept. 22 are: chess and bingo on Monday; gospel music and potluck, craft class, Wii bowling and wood carvers on Tuesday; legal planning class, bunco tournament, health screenings by Glen Rose Nursing & Rehab, September birthday celebration and line dancing lessons on Wednesday; chess and David’s shopping on Thursday; and bingo and Brookshire’s shopping on Friday. Besides the scheduled activities, there are games, puzzles, quilting, Forty-Two and visiting going on every day.

If you know anyone who may need meals, transportation, an emergency response system, medical equipment, food stamp (SNAP), Medicaid or Somervell County Food Bank applications, utility assistance applications or any other senior-oriented services, please call or come by the center.

Remember that you don’t have to be a senior to come and enjoy all of our activities or eat lunch with us. Don’t forget to visit our website at www.glenrosesccoa.com for menus, activities, articles, links to other sites and lots of pictures, or “like” our Facebook page, “Somervell Citizens’ Center.” Our number is 254-897-2139.
